Here at Zig Zag Access, we help customers all across Yorkshire (and sometimes beyond) hire and buy many types of access equipment, including scaffolding, staging boards, ladders, platforms, and podiums. While we’re often asked to recommend which types of products would be best suited to a particular project, and even visit clients on-site to assess their needs, it’s sometimes the case that we don’t know exactly what projects our equipment will be used for.
Naturally, it gives us an immense sense of satisfaction and achievement to know that our access equipment has helped to create something truly remarkable.
An excellent example of this is a project that commenced in 2013. It involved one of our most high-profile customers to-date – Lynx Energy – which is a renewable energy solutions company based in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire.
Staging Boards for Solar Power
Lynx Energy was able to take advantage of our services to help complete one of the biggest solar panel installations of its kind in the whole of Europe as part of a contract with Lightsource Renewable Energy.
We supplied the company with 194 staging boards to use at the Bentley Motors Factory in Crewe, Cheshire to aid with the installation of more than 20,000 solar panels. The panels provide up to 40% of Bentley’s energy requirements during peak generation times, and are not only helping to cut utility costs at the factory but are also cutting 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.
The location of the solar panels was 3.45 hectares of unused roof space at the Bentley Motors Factory, which just so happened to be facing in an ideal direction for generating solar power. While the concept looked great on paper, putting it into practice was no easy feat due to the challenges of freezing-cold weather conditions, tight deadlines (meaning 700 panels had to be put into position each day), multiple buildings, and operating within the confines of a fully-functioning car manufacturing plant requiring 24/7 access.
Staging boards for health and safety
As one of the contractors involved says, “the first challenge was getting on the roof”. Because the Bentley Motors site was built in the 1940s and the buildings were originally designed for aircraft manufacturing, accessing the roof was a major issue. To get around this problem, the project constructed a series of scaffolding towers and a platform which ran the length of each of the buildings, giving the installation team a safe and secure environment to work in.
